Although Niihau is known as the Forbidden Island, having remained a private property since 1864, you can certainly get an invite from the owners. If that seems a little far-fetched, catch a glimpse aboard a helicopter or by means of a Safari flying across the Island. Back to Kauai scuba diving, you can explore Kauai’s underwater all year round. The time between April and September provide the most pleasant temperatures for diving. Here are four amazing spots in Kauai and Niihau for your scuba diving pleasure.
Sheraton Caverns, Kauai
There is a reason this is the most sought-after dive site in the whole of Kauai. The depth of its water is between 30 and 60 feet, just lying some meters off Poipu Beach. You can catch the sight of green sea turtles as you swim through sunlit caverns during a summer afternoon. This is an all-divers affair as the waters provide little or no current at all, depending on the time of year. It is a boat dive.
Vertical Awareness, Ni‘ihau
How about swimming side-by-side the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal? Just so you know, they have no ears – a feature that makes them one of the rarest creatures in the world with less than 1,500 of them left. In Niihau, what they get is a refuge and a nursery to live, free from the dangers of poachers and predators. Vertical Awareness is also known for unbelievable water clarity, beautiful landscapes, and sheer drop-offs. You’ll also find scores of pelagic, sandbar sharks, and giant trevally under this great sea of adventure.
Turtle Bluffs – Fish Bowl – General Store
These are three spots and activities done together. The trail is one of suspense, intrigue, and a thrilling encounter with fishes, overhangs, and caves. If you are lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of sharks, turtles, and black coral trees. This diving adventure is often done in that order because of prevailing currents. However, a reverse in current will also lead to a reverse in the order. Still, what you’ll get is a memorable time underwater. Staring at aquatic beings that just stare at you and the camera.
Tunnels Beach
Regarded as the ultimate scuba divers beach, Tunnels Beach is a pristine and well-kept beach in Kauai. With palms and ironwood trees at its fringes, and mountains and the lush jungle forming its backdrop. This perfect location is also known for its magical underwater world you should explore. Underwater caverns formed by lava tubes and amazing fishes are also a good sight to behold when you go under.
